Larry Eugene Krig, 72, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2018 in Naples, Florida. Tenderly known as “Papa Larry” to family and close friends, he was infamous for his quick wit, quiet kindness, and his chocolate chip cookies.
Larry was born April 8, 1946 in Salina, Kansas to Alice Nell Mattson Krig and Victor Eugene Krig. He was the oldest of three children. He grew up playing baseball, football, and the tuba. He met his wife of 52 years, Susan (Suzi) Jennifer Phillips, in choir during high school. After dating three years, they married in 1966. He graduated from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. Larry’s career was spent in the automotive industry in sales and management.
A lover of music, he was involved in numerous choirs, bands, and orchestras throughout his life. He was a longtime member of the Celebration Choir and Orchestra at First Baptist Church Richardson, and most recently, the Naples Philharmonic Chorus. Larry enjoyed fishing, golfing, trip worthy food, spending time with family and close friends, and cuddling with his grandchildren. He appreciated nostalgic chronicles of World War II movies and music, The Andy Griffith Show and Antiques Roadshow. He was affectionately known as “the mayor of Palmetto Dunes” in Naples.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Suzi, and his daughters Holly Krig-Smith (Steve Smith), and Katy Cleveland (Darren Cleveland), grandchildren Madeline Smith, Emma Smith, Philip Jones (Leighanne Jones), Aaron Jones, Loree Jones, Chelsey Cleveland, Ashley Cleveland, Danielle Williams (Schwartzman), and great-granddaughter Wimberley Cleveland. Larry is survived by his brother Nathan Krig, and preceded in death by his sister, Diane Campbell. Larry is also survived by nieces Heather Loyd (Micah Loyd), Natalie Glover (Dallas Merritt), and Victoria Krig. He had three great-nieces Alison Loyd, Mia Hurst, and Alivia Loyd. Honorary grandchildren who called him “Papa Larry”, Caroline, Will, Julia, Olivia, Hudson, Rachel and Cole.
