Karl Heinz Wettels

April 25, 1933 ~ February 12, 2021 (age 87)

Tribute

Karl Heinz Wettels, 87, entered into eternal rest on February 12, 2021, peacefully, with his family by his side. He was born in Hamburg, Germany on April 25, 1933 to Peter and Helene (Heitmann) Wettels.

Karl grew up in war-torn Germany and had little formal education; but at the age of 14, he learned the carpentry trade, later completing his apprenticeship. For a few years, he worked as a custom cabinetmaker in Volksdorf before coming to America in 1954. Settling first in Astoria, Queens, New York, and then building his home in Hopewell Jct., NY. He married Roberta Libretti in 1957. They raised three children. Karl taught his children the German work ethic, which enabled each of them to have successful careers, with his son following in his footsteps. Karl worked as a manager at Lloyd Lumber, locations in Fishkill and Brewster, NY and later at the Dill's Best Building Centers from which he retired in 1996. After his divorce, he married his second wife, Barbara Mellia in 1979. A few years later, he built her a magnificent house - the culmination of his building skills - where they lived with their dogs, Pepper, Teddy, Chelsea, Felix and Baby Lynn, over the years.

While visiting his daughter in Naples in 1987, he decided to buy a retirement home. He and Barbara visited Naples whenever they had vacation time and became "snow birds" for five or six months after retirement. They finally became Florida residents in 2019. They looked forward to their time in Naples each winter, where they made many cherished friendships.

Karl was a quiet, pensive, gentle man with a wonderful sense of humor when he got to know you well. He was always available to help family and friends with home improvement projects. He loved bowling, watching baseball and football, walking his dogs, and tending to his property and garden. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Barbara; his brother, Peter Wettels (Darnell) of Bonita Springs, FL; his children, Elaine Wettels (Rob Sirico) of Naples, FL, Carl Robert Wettels (Deborah) of Hopewell Jct., NY and Melinda Dixon (Mike) of Chalfont, PA; his grandchildren, Danielle Washburn (Nicholas) of Hopewell Jct., NY, Karl Christopher Wettels of Hopewell Jct., NY, Ryan Dixon of Hermosa Beach, CA and Sean Dixon of Chalfont, PA; his nieces, Heidi Wettels of New Paltz, NY and Karin Wettels-Rodriguez of Los Angeles, CA and his nephew, Eric Wettels of Bonita Springs, FL. He was predeceased by his first wife, Roberta Romano.

There will be no calling hours or services in Naples. A Celebration of Life and burial will be held next year in Hopewell Jct., NY where he lived most of his life.

The family would like to extend special thanks to his caregivers, Laurie and Cory Joseph and the nurses and staff at Avow Hospice who filled his final weeks and days with love and compassion.
